Counselling for Adults

Counselling Support for Adults

Time out with a professional can give people clarity on a situation and a better understanding of their feelings to help work through emotions. What each person is going through is unique; that’s why our counselling is moulded around the individual. We choose a counsellor carefully to match their needs and build a trusting relationship so thoughts and feelings can be shared freely.

Complete confidentiality

There’s no need for people to hold back when they’re with their counsellor. There’s no judgement, they never need to worry about offending us and everything they share is completely confidential. However, if there is a risk of harm to self or another, we will work with them to get additional support from other services so everyone is safe.

As well as talking therapy, the counsellor may encourage some creative work to help express emotions and find practical ways to cope.

The Sessions: One-to-One Counselling

People can choose to see their counsellor face to face at the hospice, via video call, telephone, or a combination; whichever works best for them. Sessions take place up to 5pm, with each one lasting around 50 minutes.

The frequency of the counselling depends on individual circumstances and is agreed between the person and their counsellor. For people living with a life-limiting illness, and their families, counselling support can last up to 20 sessions with more available if needed.

Making a Referral for Counselling

The first step is always a telephone assessment with one of our counselling team to get to know the person and understand how they’re feeling. We then share ways to help them begin working through their emotions before their first full counselling session.
