Counselling for Young People (Ages 11 to 17)

Counselling Support for Young People (ages 11 to 17)

Anticipating the loss of or losing a parent, grandparent or other loved one in your teens can be frightening and confusing. Talking therapy is a chance for a young person to express feelings and understand complex emotions to begin to make sense of what’s happening.

We also work to help them keep a continuing bond with their loved ones. We put practical ideas in place to help them cope, and because their counsellor takes account of their age as well as maturity to recognise who they are, sometimes aspects of adult counselling can be used to give them the tools they need.

Their counsellor might also introduce them to practical, creative therapies to help articulate things that can be difficult to put into words.

What happens after a referral is made?

The first step is a short pre-assessment with a parent or guardian followed by a full assessment with the young person, allowing one of our counselling team to get to know the person and understand how they’re feeling and whether we can meet their needs.

What happens during a counselling session?

Counselling can take place face-to-face at the hospice, or via video call, telephone, or a combination. We can also arrange to see young adults at school to avoid missing too many lessons. Wherever the counselling takes place, sessions happen up to 5pm, with each one lasting around 50 minutes depending on how the person is managing in that time.

Sessions are arranged according to the individual’s circumstances. For example, where they are dealing with anticipatory grief, sometimes the counsellor will help them discover and act on the things important to them within their relationship with their loved one who is facing the end of their life, so session frequency might change.

How many counselling sessions will there be?

Counselling lasts up to 12 sessions. However, as young adults get older and their understanding changes, we welcome them back for further counselling if it’s needed.
