What happens after a referral is made?
The first step is a short pre-assessment with a parent or guardian followed by a full assessment with the child or young person, allowing one of our counselling team to get to know the person and understand how they’re feeling and whether we can meet their needs.
What happens during a counselling session?
Counselling usually takes place face-to-face at the hospice or we will visit children in school. The first few sessions can sometimes focus on building trust through playing familiar games and asking questions about the things children enjoy, like favourite TV shows. Once we have established a good rapport, the creative techniques and tools are introduced.
How long does a counselling session last?
Sessions last up to 50 minutes with the counsellor guided by how the child is managing during the session, and further sessions are arranged according to the child’s circumstances. For example, where they are dealing with anticipatory grief, sometimes the counsellor will help them discover and act on the things that are important to them within their relationship with their loved one who is facing the end of their life, and so session frequency might change.
How many counselling sessions will there be?
Counselling lasts up to 12 sessions. A child’s understanding of what’s happening or has happened, and their feelings, usually change as they get older and sometimes, they need help untangling complex emotions.
