Accessing KEMP Services when you need them most – Maureen’s Story
Here at KEMP, we have a range of services to support residents of the Wyre Forest. It’s important to us that our patients are accessing all the services they need when they need them. That’s why we wanted to share Maureen’s story. Maureen has benefited from a range of KEMP Services since she was first referred to us in 2018.
Help from KEMP Hospice
Maureen moved to the area and was referred to KEMP Hospice as she lives with Emphysema, Bronchiectasis and more recently has been diagnosed with Epilepsy. Before the start of the COVID lockdown, Maureen regularly attended KEMP Day Hospice. Maureen said, “It was a wonderful release to come to the Hospice, as unfortunately my Husband was also suffering with illness”.
Whilst she had access to the clinical care, Maureen explains how it has also helped with her emotional wellbeing too, “I loved the social side, enjoying lunch and refreshments. I am also so grateful to Chef Richard. When I have a severe episode, I can lose a lot of weight. Richard has tailor made food for me to help with my diet so I can eat little and often”.
Support During Lockdown
During the lockdown, when KEMP set up their Virtual Day Hospice, Maureen attended both Tai Chi and Relaxation sessions. Maureen continued “I found the sessions extremely relaxing, and they helped so much with my breathlessness. The Tai Chi has also helped with my arthritis. I always looked forward to the classes and joining the group online”.

SUPPORT WHEN YOU NEED IT MOST
We understand that over time, the needs of our patients can change, so it’s important to us that we can continue to help them at times when needed the most. After Maureen’s Husband Keith sadly passed away, she was further supported by KEMP with Financial Advice, and was referred to KEMP’s Family Support & Bereavement Services Team for counselling support sessions. “Last year I received bereavement counselling which has helped me a great deal in coming to terms with the loss of my husband. It’s also helped to contine to support my physical and emotional wellbeing.”
Laurey Grennall Head of Hospice Services said “We’re here for residents of the Wyre Forest and it’s important that they access the support they need when they need it. I’d like to take this opportunity to thank Maureen for allowing us to share her story, so others can understand the support that is available to them”.
Every year we help make life better for people like Maureen who are living across the Wyre Forest district. Because people can self-refer or ask a family member, carer, or GP to refer them, our support is easy to access, and we never charge for our care. However, KEMP relies on voluntary donations and gifts in wills to support our work.
