Mary & Phillip’s Story

Mary and Phillip had intended to marry, until a cancer diagnosis meant Phillip’s health deteriorated. Find out how KEMP Hospice helped them have their special day at home.

Mary and Phillip had intended to marry, until a cancer diagnosis meant Phillip’s health deteriorated and he was no longer able to make it to the registry office. Mary said “We had intended to get married some time ago, but sadly it was taken out of our control because of Phillip’s cancer diagnosis. Everything was turned upside down and our priority became Phillip’s treatment and care. It’s been such a challenging time. Obviously helping support Phillip with his care has been my priority, but it has been quite daunting at times”

Support from KEMP Hospice

“After Phillip’s last radiotherapy treatment, we were told he should consider palliative care. That’s when he was referred to KEMP Hospice”. KEMP have been supporting Mary and Phillip, but it was through a passing comment during a conversation with Finance and Welfare Advisor Anne, that set the wedding wheels in motion. “After I happened to mention we had intended to get married, Anne suggested that she thought she could help, so of course we jumped at the chance. I didn’t realise how quickly she could make it happen though! Within the space of a week, we’d spoken to all the people needed, filled in all the documents, and had all the arrangements made”

Married at Home with Family by their side

On a lovely sunny Saturday afternoon, Mary and Phillip were married, in their own home, with Phillip’s best friend and his brother as witnesses. “We’re so thrilled we were able to have the ceremony. It was made even more special by the fact we could be married in our own home. We’re both so grateful to Anne and everyone at KEMP who have been so lovely and helped us to finally be able to say I do.”
